National Sorry Day: NSW Government's Statement Honoring Stolen Generation Survivors and Commitment to Reconciliation

On this significant day, Friday, May 26, 2023, which marks National Sorry Day,

They come together to pay tribute to the resilience and strength of the Stolen Generation Survivors. It is a day for us to recommit ourselves to the pursuit of reconciliation, healing, and truth-telling throughout New South Wales and across Australia.

National Sorry Day serves as a solemn occasion for us to reflect upon the deep trauma, pain, and injustices inflicted by the policies of child removal, as well as the enduring intergenerational effects of these policies. We acknowledge the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples across NSW for their unwavering courage in leading self-determined healing within their families and communities.

Throughout New South Wales and Australia, numerous events will take place today, fostering opportunities for communities to unite in acknowledging our history and collectively strive for a brighter future. As the New South Wales Government, we express our gratitude to the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have shared their stories with non-Indigenous Australians, guiding us on the path to reconciliation.

This year, the theme for National Reconciliation Week is "Be a Voice for Generations." It calls upon all Australians to leverage their influence, words, and voting power to shape a more equitable and just Australia for all. National Reconciliation Week also presents an opportunity to deepen our understanding of shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each one of us can contribute to the achievement of reconciliation in our nation.

We are pleased to inform you that the Council will be hosting a Community Information Forum, which will be held free of charge at the Novotel Sydney on Thursday, June 1. To secure your attendance, please ensure you register in advance as registrations are essential.

Let us stand together in solidarity, acknowledging the past, and committing to a future built on mutual respect, understanding, and inclusivity.
